Biography:
Adriaen van Ostade probably studied under Frans Hals, where he was inspired by the subject matter of fellow pupil, Adriaen Brouwer. His early work depicted peasant scenes that incorporated Rembrandt’s technique of chiaroscuro. He later began painting calmer interior scenes. Van Ostade was a prolific painter and also created portraits and still lifes. In addition, he was second only the Rembrandt as a leading Dutch etcher in the seventeenth century. He also painted watercolors that became very popular after 1670. Over eight hundred of van Ostade’s works still survive. His pupils include Isack and Jan Steen.
